The Parent Collective offers an evidence-based prenatal series designed to help couples establish local friendships among others living local to them and due at the same time, all while skipping the judgments and agendas of some of the other classes out there. We hope that couples taking a TPC series will cultivate a social network through weekly participation, build a solid prenatal/parental support system and of course, gather playmates for the little ones on the way.
The support piece of our class is key as we recognize that it’s hard to make friends as adults and can be easier with pregnancy or a newborn as the common thread. Too many expectant parents don’t realize the importance of making these connections in advance of having their babies. There are many reasons why investing in these relationships before babies arrive is important;
- short maternity leaves
- adjusting to new routines
- 1 in 7 women struggle postpartum with some form of anxiety or depression and having a friend to call on immediately is crucial
- shifting from pregnancy to motherhood means a shift in emotion from excitement and nervousness (which we can share in with others) to fear of judgment and fear of doing the parenting thing wrong
These can impede our ability to develop real connections after our baby arrives. Combine that with severe sleep deprivation and a hormone-fueled emotional rollercoaster and putting your best social foot forward is challenging!
Mom friends at every stage of parenting are wonderful but navigating the unknown of the first few months with a friend in the same boat is invaluable. Those friends who are in the weeds with you during your baby’s first growth spurt, sleep regression, colic, or teething can offer you sanity-saving advice that moms in different stages simply won’t remember. They have moved on, developing coping mechanisms for toddler derangement and potty-training strategies. Once you survive each baby phase, you must dump all unnecessary information to make room for the new.
Our Prenatal Class Series is designed for couples (birth partners are welcome) to both learn and socialize, over the course of a four-week period. Each session is 2 hours with ample time for discussion and relationship building. Our classes are best taken in the third trimester, ideally completing before 36 weeks of pregnancy.
