Brand Negotiations 101

Most moms don’t know where to start when it comes to negotiating brand deals, but we can help! Although we can’t give you an exact number without discussing with you personally, we can let you know what factors to consider when setting your price.

So much goes into one 15 second video, and sometimes brands forget that.

Think about every single thing you’ll be doing. The end product may be a 15 second video, but what went into that 15 seconds?

Some things to consider are:

  • Expertise
  • Experience
  • Your audience (for influencers)
  • Deliverables
  • Does the brand want to preview? Make revisions?
  • Usage rights

Expertise & Experience

Take into consideration the years or the time that it took you to gain your skills. Consider formal education and training as well.

Audience

This is especially true for influencers with large followings. You’ve taken the time to grow your community and gain the trust of your followers. Allowing a brand to be a part of that and market to your community gives you some leverage with pricing.

Deliverables

What is the brand asking for? And how much? Do they want photos and videos? What about the length of the videos? Do they want the raw videos as well? These are all questions to ask the brand so that you can accurately calculate what to charge.

Edits & Revisions

Editing and revising videos takes time, so make sure you discuss how many times a brand can revise, or if they even want to. Also consider that you can add fees for multiple edits or any changes after the deliverables have been accepted.

Usage Rights

According to Zine.com,

“Usage rights define who owns the content and where it can be used. In the case of a brand or agency, usage rights will dictate which additional channels the content can be used on. Usage rights largely depend on two factors:

  • Placement
  • Length of time”

The more a brand wants to use and distribute the content, the higher fee a creator can charge.

To Conclude…

You have to think about every single thing that you’re doing for this project, in order to price it fairly for yourself, and also be transparent with the brand about how much work it does to do something.

A lot of times, and I’ve been guilty of this myself, back in the day, you’re so eager to get that brand deal, and you really want to work with the brand, that you sell yourself short. Don’t get into that habit, I was in that habit. I undercharged myself for many years, and I don’t want you to do that. It’s very hard once you start doing that to get out of that.

Be confident in what you’re charging, and delivering!
